LA Techweek 2023 has wrapped up — what a week it was! As someone who attended and hosted a few events, I can’t even begin to describe the incredible experience it was. The energy throughout the week was off the charts, with panels and networking sessions that showcased the passion and innovation defining the Los Angeles startup scene. LA Techweek went above and beyond all my expectations!

Now, let’s talk about what makes the LA startup ecosystem special. First of all, did you know that LA is the third largest startup ecosystem in the US? Yep, it’s right up there with the Bay Area and New York! But here’s the really impressive part: LA has been expereing a whopping 20% growth in its number of VC-backed startups. Last year alone, a record-breaking $9.5 billion was invested in LA startups. That kind of support speaks volumes about the boundless potential that this thriving ecosystem holds.

Our city is a vibrant melting pot of cultures, and this diversity is a driving force behind the entrepreneurial spirit that flourishes here. With over 200 languages spoken and an astounding one out of every three LA residents being foreign-born, our ecosystem is a true testament to the power of embracing diversity.

LA Techweek 2023 provided just a glimpse into the incredible momentum that is building, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about what lies ahead. The unique blend of diversity and unwavering energy sets our ecosystem apart, creating an environment where dreams have the potential to become reality. Keep a close eye on LA because it’s where the magic truly happens!

Here are some of my favorite moments from this year:

I kicked off the week with the Coffee at Slauson LA Techweek event! Slauson & Co, a $75M pre-seed fund focused on fostering economic inclusion, is making waves in the LA startup ecosystem. Having worked closely with their team during my time at Grid110 as part of their Friends & Family program, it was a treat to reunite with old colleagues and meet new founders at the event.

That’s what truly sets the LA ecosystem apart. The relationships you build here go far beyond just work. The spirit of community remains strong, and it’s what makes this ecosystem so special and uplifting. It’s a place where genuine connections are valued, and personal growth is just as important as professional success.

Next up, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the All Raise LA Strategy Tour meeting! Our new CEO, Paige Hendrix Buckner, has been embarking on a cross-country journey with her team, meeting with the steering committee leaders in different cities to gather their invaluable input and insights.

As someone who has been a part of the LA Steering Committee for the past two years, it was so meaningful for me to share my experiences and contribute to shaping the future of All Raise, both locally and nationally. I’m beyond excited to see what the future holds for All Raise!

Later in the week, our Steering Committee hosted the Tala & All Raise Mixer, which was an absolute hit! The format was interactive breakout sessions, bringing together female founders and investors to discuss meaningful topics. We covered everything from fundraising tips to the latest buzz in health tech and AI. Thank you to the Tala team for hosting us at their office space in Santa Monica, and thank you to our amazing discussion leads for volunteering your time!

It was incredible to see people leave the event with new connections, practical insights, and valuable resources. This mixer was all about empowering and equipping each other for success, and it truly delivered in every way possible!

Last but not least — Our very first Unshackled Ventures event in Los Angeles! I had the privilege of moderating a panel featuring two remarkable immigrant founders, Ezinne Iroanya and Isoken Igbinedion. Their stories of success in the US were truly inspiring. What made this event even more special was the support of my fantastic teammates, Ale and Emani, who flew in to help make it happen. Big shoutout to them!

It was a wonderful way to close out LA Techweek, bringing together a vibrant community of diverse entrepreneurs, investors, and dreamers. The panel format created a space for open discussions about the unique challenges immigrant founders face, fostering empathy and offering valuable insights. It was a moment of connection and empowerment that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the LA startup ecosystem.

The energy and enthusiasm throughout the week reminded me why I fell in love with the LA startup scene six years ago. It’s a place where dreams come to life, and people genuinely uplift and support each other. Cheers to a fantastic Techweek and all the exciting adventures ahead! See you next year! 👋🏼
